PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Illinois Wesleyan University made the plays late in first and third sets that went down to the wire and the Lakeland University men's volleyball team was defeated in three sets Sunday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Titans prevailed 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 to remain undefeated at 4-0 this season. Lakeland concluded a busy weekend at home by dropping to 3-3 overall, falling Sunday in their third match in 24 hours after defeating Maranatha Baptist University and the University of Olivet (Mich.) on Saturday.
The match included 24 ties and 11 lead changes, with all of those but one coming in the first and third sets. The Muskies had leads late in both sets, ahead 21-20 late in the first and as late as 23-22 in the second set, but Illinois Wesleyan pulled out both sets, including finishing both sets with service aces.
A first set that saw 13 ties and eight lead changes was tied at 22-22 after a kill by Lakeland's
Jakob Donohue (
Sr.-Milwaukee, Wis.). IWU responded with the final three points, including kills by Gavin Rohlwing and setter Ethan Kuziela and then an ace by Aydin Provost on set points.
The third set included 10 ties and three lead changes, though Lakeland played from slightly behind much of the way until a 6-1 run late including kills by
Sage Xiong (
So.-Erie, Colo.) and
Colin Putchinski (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) and a block by
Chase Anderson (
Sr.-Hartford, Wis.) keyed a 21-18 lead. The Muskies still were ahead 23-22 after another kill by Donohue, but Illinois Wesleyan scored two straight to get to match point at 24-23. The Titans missed a serve to tie it at 24-24, but Provost delivered another kill and Ryan Jilly served an ace on the second match point to wrap it up.
The Muskies had no answers for Provost, the IWU freshman who finished with 21 kills and posted a .531 attack percentage for the match. Provost registered the first kill of the match, posted 11 kills over the first two sets and then added 10 kills in the final set.
Lakeland finished attacking at a .181 rate with 33 kills and 16 errors, behind Illinois Wesleyan's .267 hitting with 45 kills and 17 errors. The Titans also finished with a 7-1 advantage in service aces and a 6-4 edge in blocks.
Xiong finished with a season-high 11 kills and Donohue added nine kills and .571 attack percentage with just one error in 14 swings. Anderson finished with 24 assists, eight digs and three blocks (one solo, two assisted) and
Luke Schultz (
Fr.-Waukesha, Wis.) added eight digs.
The Muskies are home again on Friday for their second home triangular of the season. Lakeland faces Maranatha Baptist at 2 p.m. and then Calvin (Mich.) University at 6 p.m., with Maranatha and Calvin also squaring off at 4 p.m.
