Series history:Â Lakeland leads the all-time series against Wittenberg 3-2 but trails the all-time series against UC Santa Cruz 12-0. UC Santa Cruz and UW-Stevens Point are meeting for just the second time, with the Banana Slugs winning the schools' first matchup last year in three sets, and Wittenberg and UWSP are meeting for the first time Saturday.
About Lakeland:Â The Muskies come in with a 5-7 record and off a three-set loss to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rival St. Norbert on Tuesday. Lakeland is now 0-2 in the NACC and 5-5 in non-conference matches this season, including wins over Greenville (Ill.) and Westminster (Mo.) on the road just last weekend. Senior setter
Chase Anderson also continues to close in on the program record for career assists, entering Saturday with 2,295 assists, now 259 assists from tying Addison Mertler's record of 2,554 assists set from 2016-19.
About UC Santa Cruz: A perennially strong NCAA Division III program, the Banana Slugs are off to a 9-1 start to their season. Santa Cruz is on the second of three trips to the Midwest on its schedule and last night defeated No. 3-ranked Carthage in five sets in Kenosha in a matchup of top 10 teams in the AVCA/NCAA Division III coaches poll. The Banana Slugs-named after, per the school, "a bright yellow, slimy, shell-less mollusk commonly found on the redwood forest floor"-also already have wins over No. 6-ranked NYU and No. 13 Vassar (N.Y.) this season, and their only loss came on the road against 9th-ranked Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) in five sets.
About UW-Stevens Point:Â The Pointers come in off a win in their most recent match, sweeping Marian in three sets last Friday in Stevens Point. UWSPÂ had lost its previous three matches, all coming against teams either currently or formerly in the national rankings this year. The Pointers are in their third year as a varsity program and posted winning records each of their first two campaigns, including a 19-8 mark as a Division III independent last year.
About Wittenberg: The Tigers enter with an 8-3 record this season and last weekend picked up a big win, defeating defending Division III national champions and 5th-ranked Southern Virginia in five sets. That win put Wittenberg on the verge of joining the national rankings, as the Tigers were the first team out of this week's AVCA/NCAA Division III Top 20 Coaches Poll. Wittenberg does share one common opponent with Lakeland, falling to Westminster (Mo.) in five sets back in January, three weeks before the Muskies defeated the Bluejays in four sets in Missouri.
