MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Wisconsin Lutheran College dominated play in the second and third quarters and the Lakeland University women's basketball team saw its season end with an 80-49 loss Wednesday night in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
The top-seeded Warriors (21-5 overall) won their 11th straight game and advanced to a NACC Tournament semifinal game against No. 4 Milwaukee School of Engineering on Friday, after MSOE handled fifth-seeded Benedictine University 70-46 on Wednesday. The No. 8 seed Muskies saw their season end with an 11-15 record.
Lakeland stayed with the Warriors for a quarter, trailing 16-9 after ten minutes of play, but Wisconsin Lutheran went on a 22-0 run in the second quarter to take over. WLC outscored the Muskies 29-9 in the second period to take a 45-18 halftime lead and then posted a 25-9 advantage in the third quarter as well to lead 70-27 after three.
Lakeland shot 28.6% for the game, making 16 of 56 field goals. The Muskies did mount a rally in the fourth quarter to make the final score a bit more respectable, making 8 of 15 shots in the period and going on a 22-2 run late.
Lauryn Johnson (
Sr.-Kenosha, Wis.) scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds and
A.T. Bartlett (
Farmington Hills, Mich.) also added 12 points and six boards.
Madelyn Abler (
Fr.-Random Lake, Wis.) and
Sonia Pagan (
So.-Hales Corners, Wis.) also both scored seven points each.
Wisconsin Lutheran finished shooting 50.0% for the game (32 of 64) and finished with a 46-28 rebounding advantage. WLC was led by Abby Cole with 19 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Maddie Ratzow also added 11 points off the bench.
The game was the final one for four Lakeland seniors: Bartlett,
Lauryn Johnson,
Amari Banks (
Aurora, Ill.) and
Alexis Johnson (
Sheboygan, Wis.).
