MSOE pulls away with huge second-half run to defeat ice-cold Lakeland

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Milwaukee School of Engineering swung a close game with a 25-3 run in the second half and the Lakeland University women's basketball team was defeated 65-40 Wednesday night in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Muskies were held to their lowest point total of the season and dropped to 9-12 overall and 6-7 in the NACC with four regular season games remaining. MSOE moved to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in conference.

Lakeland shot just 26.9%, making 14 of 52 shots in the game and shooting below 30% in both halves. The Muskies also committed 23 turnovers, which the Raiders turned into a 27-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

Even with offensive struggles, Lakeland trailed by just four early in the third quarter when A.T. Bartlett (Sr.-Farmington Hills, Mich.) hit a three-pointer to cut MSOE's lead to 31-27 with 7:29 left in the period. The Raiders would put the game away over the next 11 minutes, though, outscoring the Muskies 25-3 capped by a layup by Mahima Chokshi making it 56-30 with 6:51 left in the game.

Lakeland stayed with the Engineers for the duration of the first half, including leading most of the game's first six minutes after a three-pointer by Sadie Grabow (So.-Bourbonnais, Ill.) and two free throws by Alexis Johnson (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.). MSOE answered with a 13-2 run to go up by eight late in the first quarter, but the Muskies came back to tie at 17-17 on a jumper by Bartlett midway through the second period. The Muskies were still within a point when Ariana Vaitkeviciute (So.-Merrionette Park, Ill.) scored to make it 20-19 before the Raiders pulled out to a 29-22 halftime lead.

Bartlett paced Lakeland with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals and Sydney Nimsakont (So.-Glendale Heights, Ill.) also scored nine points off the bench. No other Muskie scored more than five points.

Halena Hill led MSOE with 15 points plus six rebounds and four assists and Lana Kerley posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Raiders shot 43.9% (25 of 57), including 50% in the second half (14 of 28).

The Muskies are back home Saturday for Alumni Day, facing Dominican University at 1 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
