WEST LIBERTY, Iowa –
Sean Gregorius (
So.-Germantown, Wis.) and
Rily Roberts (
So.-Chattanooga, Tenn.) combined to drive in four runs,
Mikey Hernandez (
Jr.-Lennox, Calif.) pitched seven strong innings and Lakeland University bested Cornell (Iowa) College 11-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies defeated the Rams for the second straight time and took two of three in the teams' season opening series. The teams played just one game of a scheduled two on Saturday, playing a single nine-inning game instead of the previously scheduled doubleheader.
Hernandez was impressive for the second straight day, doing so on the mound Saturday after a two-homer, five-RBI game in the Muskies' win over the Rams Friday night. The junior college transfer pitched seven innings and allowed just five hits and one run while striking out five and walking three to earn the win.
Hernandez received all the support he would need in the first inning when Lakeland scored a pair of unearned runs, with
Logan South (
So.-Oswego, Ill.) and later
Chris Finn (
Jr.-Mapleton, Ill.) scoring on errors. Roberts singled in two runs with a two-out single in the third for a 4-1 lead, and the Muskies then broke the game open late with seven runs over the final three innings against Cornell relievers.
Hernandez helped his cause with a run-scoring single in the seventh, and Gregorious hit a two-run double in the eighth to make it 8-1. Lakeland added three more unearned runs in the ninth, with Roberts and
J.T. Cortinas (
Jr.-Chino Hills, Calif.) scoring on an error and
Chris Day (
Sr.-Victorville, Calif.) coming home on a wild pitch.
Lakeland outhit Cornell 11-6, with Gregorius, Roberts and Cortinas all posting two hits each. Cortinas, Finn and
Sam Goodrum (
Fr.-Fort Collins, Colo.) also all scored two runs each.
Bryce Backus (
So.-Kenosha, Wis.) and
Eli Watkins (
Jr.-Herrin, Ill.) both followed Hernandez with one scoreless inning each in relief, with Backus allowing one hit and Watkins pitching a hitless ninth with two strikeouts.
Lucas Brutsche pitched six innings for the Rams, allowing six hits and four runs (two earned) with a strikeout and two walks. Jackson Hill and Luke Hull led Cornell at the plate with two hits each.
Lakeland is in action again Wednesday when it travels to take on Carroll University for a single nine-inning game at 2 p.m. in Waukesha.
