AUBURNDALE, Fla. –
Jonathan Maldonado (
La Puente, Calif.) and
Owen Fekety (
Fr.-Lancaster, Calif.) both delivered strong starts,
Dylan Costello (
Sr.-New Berlin, Wis.) drove in five runs and the Lakeland University baseball team evened its record on the season and on spring break with a pair of victories at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational Thursday.
The Muskies defeated Fitchburg State (Mass.) University 6-1 in their first game and then trounced Albertus Magnus (Conn.) College 9-1 in their second of the day. Lakeland has now won four straight games, moving to 4-4 on its spring break trip, and is now 6-6 overall on the season.
Lakeland received excellent pitching in both contests, including Maldonado going seven innings in the opener against Fitchburg State. The junior allowed just five hits and one run with four strikeouts for his first win as a Muskie, and
Byron Lupian (
Jr.-Corona, Calif.) cleaned up the final two innings allowing just one hit while striking out two.
Fekety was just as strong in the second game against Albertus Magnus, allowing six hits and one run with six strikeouts to earn his second win of the season.
Eli Watkins (
Jr.-Herrin, Ill.) finished with a hitless final two innings, allowing two hits.
Costello provided all the offense the Muskies would need in both games, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs against Fitchburg State (2-7 overall) and then going 1-for-2 at the plate plus two sacrifice flies with three RBIs total against Albertus Magnus.
His RBI single in the third inning to drive in
Jordan Domingue (
Jr.-Victorville, Calif.) opened the scoring in the opener against Fitchburg State, and the Muskies followed with two runs in the fourth and three in the seventh, including another RBI single by Costello plus a
Chris Finn (
Jr.-Mapleton, Ill.) sending in two more runs while reaching on an error.
Lakeland fell behind briefly in the second contest against Albertus Magnus (2-4 overall), with the Falcons striking first for a run in the top of the first, but the Muskies came right back with two in the bottom of the inning with Costello hitting his first sacrifice fly and Finn's sac bunt scoring
J.T. Cortinas (
Jr.-Chino Hills, Calif.). Lakeland would tack on two runs in the third, fifth and eight innings, plus a single run in the seventh, with Finn's RBI double in the third and then a two-run home run by
Mikey Hernandez (
Jr.-Lennox, Calif.) providing the biggest blows.
Domingue added two hits in the first game, while
Sean Gregorius (
So.-Germantown, Wis.) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the second game. Cortinas also scored three runs from his leadoff spot.
The Muskies wrap up their spring break trip Friday with two games, first taking on Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) College in the morning and then wrapping up by taking on the University of Southern Maine at noon Central, 1 p.m. Eastern time.
