BELOIT, Wis. –
Isai Gil (
Jr.-Beaumont, Calif.) scored in the 84th minute capping the Lakeland University men's soccer team's comeback in a 2-1 defeat of Beloit College Sunday afternoon in the rain at Beloit's Strong Soccer Field.
The Muskies continued the program's longest winning streak in 18 years, winning their sixth straight match and their sixth match in 11 days. The team has now tied for the longest winning streak in program history and will attempt to break the record Wednesday night in a challenging Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener against Edgewood University in Madison.
Lakeland (6-1 overall) trailed 1-0 in the second half when Beloit's Miles Morrow scored the game's first goal 53 minutes, 51 seconds into the match. The Muskies battled back to tie just over six minutes later, when
Jordan Davis-Troller (Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.) scored his third goal of the season.
Lakeland scored the winner on a length of the field counterattack. A takeaway from a Beloit midfielder resulted in
Woodlens Frederic (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) carrying the ball into the offensive end, then threading a pass through to Gil, who got to the ball before Beloit goalkeeper Ben Borger Germann could corral it and punched it in the net for his fourth goal of the season.
The Muskies came back to win in a game where they held a 25-12 advantage in shots, including a 17-7 lead in the second half. Davis-Troller finished with six shot attempts and Gil and
Dunia Wangu (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) added five shots each.
Ali Faiad (
Fr.-Tampa, Fla.) made six saves to earn the win. Borger Germann stopped 11 shots for the Buccaneers (0-5 overall), who lost by a single goal for the third time this season.
