PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Dunia Wangu (
Jr.-Tanzania) continued a hot start to the season with two more goals and the Lakeland University men's soccer team shut out Cornell (Iowa) College 3-0 Saturday afternoon at John Taylor Memorial Field.
Wangu scored goals three and four of the week and the Muskies won their home opener to improve to 2-1 overall. Lakeland also defeated Cornell for the second straight year, following up a 2-1 win over the Rams in the teams' first-ever meeting last year.
The Muskies largely controlled play against the physical Rams, outshooting the guests 13-2 for the match. That included an 8-0 advantage in the first half when Lakeland scored early and then late in the period to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
Wangu scored first at the conclusion of the 13th minute, after failed clear attempt by Cornell.
Isai Gil (
Jr.-Beaumont, Calif.) settled a ball in the air and then poked a pass to Wangu, who then fired from left of the circle just outside the 18-yard box and scored inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
The Muskies scored again in the 34th minute, creating an opportunity with pressure from the forwards. A short goal kick to Cornell defender Nathaniel Sinitambirirvoutin-Kiffer was pressured by
Woodlens Frederic (
Fr.-Green Bay, Wis.) and then Wangu, and the two forced the defender to turn it over. Wangu came up with the steal and then had a one-on-one from straight on against goalkeeper Kian Farrell, and he easily deposited the ball into the upper corner for his second goal of the match and fourth in three matches.
Lakeland added an insurance goal in the latter stages of the second half.
Andrew DeJaynes (
Jr.-Springfield, Ill.) sent a corner kick in front of the goal that went through the hands of Cornell second half goalkeeper James Withers and right to
Jordan Davis-Troller (
Sr.-Cottage Grove, Wis.), who headed it in for his first goal of the season.
Wangu finished with five of the Muskies' 13 shots with Davis-Troller adding three more.
Ali Faiad (
Fr.-Tampa, Fla.) started in goal and received the win without making a save, with
Jeremiah Reynolds (
So.-Huntley, Ill.) coming on late and making one save.
Lakeland continues its busy early season with its fourth match in seven days on Monday, hosting Maranatha Baptist University at 4 p.m. at Taylor Field.
