The Lakeland College women's soccer team dominated play and sent a barrage of shots at the goal but was still played to a 2-2 tie by Mount Mary University Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match.
The Muskies outshot the Blue Angels 42-6 for the match, peppering goalkeeper Becky Onan with 27 shots on goal. Onan made 24 saves in the match, though, and Lakeland settled for a tie in snapping a six-match losing streak and moving to 2-10-1 this season.
The Muskies got goals from
Ali Thompson (
Sr.-Plymouth, Wis.) and
Maddy Schone-Knoll (
Fr.-Roscoe, Ill.) in building a 2-0 lead. Thompson scored the first goal as Lakeland finally got on the board in the 41st minute, tapping in a crossing pass right to the front of the net from Schone-Knoll for her third goal of the season.
Lakeland doubled its lead at 71:58 of the match when
Alexa Piskule (
So.-Crystal Lake, Ill.) sent a pass to the middle that deflected off several players to Schone-Knoll, who struck the ball for her third goal of the season and a 2-0 lead.
The lead evaporated quickly, though, as the Blue Angels (2-7-2 overall) scored twice in a span of two minutes to tie the score. Just 20 seconds after the Schone-Knoll goal, Sheboygan native Emily Ristow got behind the defense and scored to make it 2-1, and just 2:01 later she scored again to knot the score at 2-2.
The Muskies had chances through the rest of regulation and in overtime. The best chance came in the first overtime, when Lakeland drew a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Piskule took the kick, but her shot struck the left post, caromed off to the right wide of the goal, and the Muskies were unable to get a rebound shot.
Lakeland attempted 14 shots in the first half, 16 in the second half and 12 over the two overtime periods. The totals included eight on goal in the first half, nine in the second half and nine more in overtime, including six in the first overtime period.
Schone-Knoll,
Krystina Cook (
Sr.-Des Plaines, Ill.) and
Tiffany Fischer (
Fr.-Sheboygan Falls, Wis.) all attempted eight shots each, and 11 of the Muskies' 12 field players attempted at least one shot.
Lakeland is back in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play and back on the road Sunday when it travels to face Concordia University Chicago at 1 p.m. in River Forest, Ill.
