The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point showed its depth in defeating the Lakeland College wrestling team 39-3 Wednesday night at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Pointers won eight of nine matches in the season opener for both teams. UWSP also has defeated the Muskies for the seventh straight year and in both teams' first match of the season for the third time in four years.
Lakeland's lone win came from freshman
Ian Gioacchini (
Kaukauna, Wis.). Gioacchini picked up his first collegiate win at 133 pounds, defeating Michael Bannach 6-3.
The Muskies were very competitive in several other matches. The best match of the night came at 165 lbs., where Logan Hermsen and
Mitchell Fucile (
So.-Chilton, Wis.) went back and forth before Hermsen pulled ahead late and then fought off a final attack from Fucile for an 11-9 win.
The match at 157 lbs. was also close and a battle between two who were no strangers from grappling in practice.
Boone Roycraft competed for Lakeland last year but transferred to Stevens Point, and he surged ahead late to defeat
Jake Maechtle (
Sr.-Port Washington, Wis.) 8-4.
The night marked the debut of Lakeland head coach
Quincy Osborn, who is in his first season coaching Lakeland.
The Muskies will be on the road Saturday when they travel to the Pointer Open hosted by UWSP. Matches begin at 9 a.m.
