Muskies’ strong start spoiled as MSOE rallies

MILWAUKEE – The Lakeland College women's basketball team couldn't make a strong start hold up as Milwaukee School of Engineering roared back from an early deficit for a 75-63 win Saturday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play.

The Muskies ran out to a 19-8 lead in the game's first 6 1/2 minutes but dropped their fourth straight game. Lakeland is now 2-7 overall and 2-5 in the NACC.

The Raiders (8-1 overall, 5-1 NACC) turned the game around with a 19-1 run late in the first half, turning a 28-21 deficit into a 40-29 lead in a span of just over six minutes. MSOE would cruise from there, leading 41-31 at halftime and going ahead by as many as 20 points in the second half.

Lakeland shot a solid 47.9% for the game, making 23 of 48 shots from the field, including 8 of 22 from three-point range. The Muskies also out-rebounded the Raiders 34-24, but were plagued by turnovers, committing 24 turnovers which MSOE turned into 23 points.

Kayla Clark (So.-West Bend, Wis.) scored a career-high 18 points, including four three-pointers. Trista Barron (Jr.-Escanaba, Mich.) scored 12 and Mikayla Hilton (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) added 11 points off the bench. Rachel Stankevich (Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) also added nine points as well as 13 rebounds.

Marly Trier scored 17 points to lead four MSOE players in double figures. The Raiders shot 48.3%, making 28 of 58 shots, as well as 16 of 20 from the free throw line (80.0%).

The Muskies are next in action on Tuesday, Dec. 30, when they travel to face Central (Iowa) College at 2 p.m. in Pella, Iowa.
