Muskies go down to Central in another close one

PELLA, Iowa – Central (Iowa) College's Rachel Evans scored all eight of her team's points in overtime, including the final six points of the game to lead her team to a 63-59 win over the Lakeland College women's basketball team Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game.

The Muskies rallied from a 14-point first half deficit to push the game to overtime but came up just short in dropping to 2-8 overall. Lakeland also lost its first-ever meeting with Central, a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference which improved to 8-2.

Evans scored a game-high 16 points off the bench, including 13 over the final 2:16 of regulation and overtime. Her two free throws with 1:46 remaining in the extra session put Central ahead for good at 61-59, and she added two more foul shots for insurance with 10 seconds left in overtime.

The Muskies took the lead twice in overtime, the last time after a basket by Rachel Stankevich (Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) made it 59-57 with 3:30 left. Lakeland went scoreless the rest of the way, though, missing its final five shot attempts.

The Muskies trailed most of the way but responded after a spurt by the Dutch in the first half to make for a nip-and-tuck game.

Central briefly took built a sizeable lead in the first half, going on a 13-0 run for a 31-17 lead with just over five minutes left in the half. Lakeland calmly got back in the game, though, closing the first half on a 13-2 run capped by a three-pointer by C.J. Usadel (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) that made it 33-30 at the break.

The Dutch led much of the second half but by no more than four points. Lakeland led just once early in the half at 38-36 but tied the score on four other occasions and sent the game to overtime on a three-pointer by Bailey Grayvold (So.-Norway, Mich.) with 32 seconds remaining to knot the score at 55-55.

Grayvold finished with 13 points and five assists while fellow sophomore Kayla Clark (West Bend, Wis.) added a team-high 14 points and four assists. Usadel added 10 points and six rebounds and Mikayla Hilton (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) pitched in with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds off the bench.

Lakeland shot 21 of 60 from the field (35.0%) but drained 10 three-pointers in 24 attempts (41.7%). The Muskies also out-rebounded Central 42-38.
