Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Concordia pounds the glass to defeat Lakeland

Missed opportunities in the paint area proved costly as the Lakeland College women's basketball team saw a brief winning streak snapped with a 69-56 loss to Concordia University Wisconsin Tuesday night at the Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies were out-rebounded 54-36 and missed a number of layups inside, especially in the first half. Those proved costly as Lakeland dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

The Falcons (5-2 overall, 3-2 NACC) finished with 24 offensive rebounds, and second chance points proved to be a big difference in the game. Concordia finished with a 25-13 advantage in second chance points, including a 16-8 margin in the first half when it took control late in the half and took a 37-29 lead into halftime.

Lakeland briefly cut the deficit to six with a basket right after the break, but the Falcons came back with six straight to take a 45-33 lead. The Muskies never got closer than 10 points again.

Lakeland shot 34.9% for the game (22 of 63) but also held the visitors to 36.8% marksmanship (25 of 68). The Muskies did drain 7 of 19 three-point attempts but made just 5 of 11 from the free throw stripe, while Concordia hit 15 of 19 from the line.

Bailey Grayvold (So.-Norway, Mich.) led Lakeland with 13 points while Trista Barron (Jr.-Escanaba, Mich.) added 12 and Kayla Clark (So.-West Bend, Wis.) had nine points and a team-high four assists. Rachel Stankevich (Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) led the Muskies with eight rebounds and Mikayla Hilton (So.-Port Washington, Wis.) added six points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Elkhart Lake native Madelyn Landgraf led Concordia with a game-high 22 points and also added eight rebounds, including four offensive boards while frequently chasing down her own missed shots. Megan Coenen finished with 13 and Brianna Wagner added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Muskies return to action Saturday when they travel to face Benedictine (Ill.) University at 6 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
