The Lakeland College football team will look to build off of an encouraging effort last week in a loss when it goes on the road to face Carthage College Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Carthage's Art Keller Field.
The Muskies come in with a 0-2 record after losing to a pair of quality opponents in Carroll and Hope (Mich.). Last week, Lakeland was nipped by Hope by a 25-22 score, as the Flying Dutchmen scored the go-ahead touchdown with 2:18 left in the game. The Muskies used big plays on offense, defense and special teams to combat Hope in an entertaining and evenly matched game that went to the wire, with Lakeland's final possession ending on an interception deep in Hope territory.
Carthage also enters with a 0-2 mark. The Red Men were idle last week, and most recently lost to Adrian (Mich.) 40-14 two weeks ago. Carthage scored first in that game but the Bulldogs rallied for 32 consecutive points.
Carthage enters the game on an 11-game losing streak since defeating Lakeland 52-6 in its season opener last year. This is the 25th meeting between the two schools and will mark the 19th consecutive year both have met. The Red Men hold a 17-7 lead in the series and have defeated the Muskies 10 straight times.
