ROCKFORD, Ill. –
Rachel Stankevich (
Fr.-Goodman, Wis.) made her first collegiate three-pointer a special one, hitting from long range at the buzzer to give the Lakeland College women's basketball team a 70-67 win over Rockford (Ill.) University Saturday afternoon.
Stankevich banked in a three-pointer for the winning points, saving the Muskies from overtime after Rockford had rallied from 21 points down to tie. Lakeland finished off a sweep of the season series, moving to 6-12 overall and 6-8 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference taking over sole possession of eighth place.
The Muskies built a big first half lead but then had to hold on in the second half as the Regents (4-14 overall, 3-10 NACC) chipped away. The Muskies led 43-22 late in the final minute of the first half and held a 43-24 lead at halftime before Rockford rallied.
The Regents trimmed the margin to single figures midway through the second half, but Lakeland still held a 67-59 with 2:01 left after a jumper by
Bailey Grayvold (
So.-Norway, Mich.). The Muskies had two turnovers and a missed shot on their next three possessions, though, and Rockford tied it on a jumper by Amanda Davis with seven seconds left for the game's first tie since the game's opening three minutes. Lakeland did not call time out after the basket, though, and Grayvold was able to get it to Stankevich in the front court, who released her shot just before time expired.
The Muskies built a big first half lead by shooting 54.6%, with Grayvold scoring 16 of her 20 points and
Trista Barron (
Jr.-Escanaba, Mich.) also added 11 points in the first 20 minutes. Lakeland also held the hosts to just 10 of 29 shooting (34.5%) in the first half.
Rockford came back in the second half by turning the tables. The Regents shot 16 of 30 after halftime (53.3%) while also holding the Muskies to 10 makes in 28 attempts (35.7%) after the break.
Barron finished with 14 points and
Emily DesJardins (
So.-Munising, Mich.) added a career-high nine points off the bench. Stankevich finished with seven points for the game and also added team highs of eight rebounds and five steals, while
Maddy Doll (
Fr.-Florence, Wis.) also finished with eight points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
Lakeland will be home for its next game Wednesday to host Milwaukee School of Engineering at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
