Muskies take shot at ending Stars' NACC streak in Friday night showdown

The Lakeland College women's volleyball team will get its shot at the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's standard-bearer program when it hosts Dominican (Ill.) University Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.

The Muskies (8-11 overall, 2-0 NACC) and Stars (13-6 overall, 2-0 NACC) are two of the five teams that are undefeated early in the conference season. Dominican's winning streak extends much longer, though-the Stars come in having won 20 straight in NACC regular season play and 25 straight against league opponents including conference tournament matches. Dominican's last loss to an NACC team was almost exactly two years ago, a five-set loss to Edgewood Oct. 5, 2013.

The Muskies have been idle this week since playing in the IIAC/NACC Challenge last weekend in Dubuque, Iowa. Lakeland finished 1-3 there, defeating the University of Dubuque while losing to Luther (Iowa), Simpson (Iowa) and host school Loras. Caleigh Galvan had 112 digs over the four matches in making the all-tournament team, and in the fourth set of the final match against Loras she set the NACC career record for digs, breaking the previous mark of 2,029 of Kathleen Collingbourne (2008-11) from MSOE. Allison Errthum led the team with 39 kills and Taylor Levitt piled up 138 assists.

Dominican's streak nearly ended earlier this week, when the Stars hosted Benedictine in a conference match Tuesday night and outlasted the Eagles in five sets. Dominican won the first two sets but then had to withstand a rally by the visitors before winning 29-27, 25-21, 23-25, 17-25, 15-11. Carri Chambers and Maddi Zanoni both had 13 kills each while Caitlen Foote led the team with 21 digs.
