For the second time this season, Lakeland University middle blocker
Laura Pearson (
Jr.-San Diego, Calif.) has been named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday.
Pearson received the honor for blocking in the Muskies' two wins last week in NACC play. She totaled 12 blocks over two matches, averaging six blocks per match and 1.5 blocks per set as Lakeland defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering and Dominican University to extend its winning streak to four matches.
Pearson set a season high with seven blocks (two solo, five assisted) as the Muskies gave MSOE its first conference loss of the season, winning in five sets this past Thursday. The 5-foot-10 junior then added five blocks (one solo, four assisted) in Lakeland's three-set sweep of Dominican on Saturday.
Pearson has been one of the top blockers in the NACC in her first season with the Muskies after transferring from Cuyamaca (Calif.) College. She has started all 21 matches and leads Lakeland with 64 blocks (13 solo, 51 assisted) and has added 45 kills, 49 digs and 16 service aces. Pearson also is second in the NACC in total blocks and ranks fifth in the conference with 0.86 blocks per set.
Pearson is the second two-time winner of the NACC's weekly defensive award this season, joining Edgewood University's Shannon Rusch as student-athletes to take the award twice.
Lakeland is 14-7 overall on the season and 5-2 in conference matches. The Muskies are in action next on Thursday when they travel to take on Illinois Tech at 7 p.m. in Chicago.
