Alec Redlich (
Wauwatosa, Wis.) recorded 18 kills and
Cole Aiazzi (
Yerington, Nev.) added 17 digs, both in just three sets of work as the Lakeland College men's volleyball team swept Fontbonne (Mo.) University in three sets Saturday afternoon at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies won 25-18, 25-22, 25-22, earning their first victory in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League play. Lakeland improved to 3-0 all-time against the Griffins and is now 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in the MCVL.
Redlich posted his 18 kills in 38 attempts, finishing with a .316 hitting percentage for the match. His total included six kills in the first set and seven in the third set.
The Muskies established momentum from the start, getting off to a 9-2 lead in the first set in establishing the lead in the match. Lakeland also came through in tight spots, pulling out the second set after leading just 22-21 late and winning the third set by scoring the final three points after the set was tied 22-22.
Kyle Krogstad (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) also finished with nine kills and setter
Jordan Smith (
Sr.-Channahon, Ill.) kept the Griffins off balance with seven kills. Smith also finished with 34 assists.
Krogstad also finished with 13 digs and Smith added 10 digs to just miss a triple-double in kills, assists and digs.
Tim Robbins (
So.-Wheaton, Ill.) also added six kills, seven digs and three block assists. The Muskies hit .214 for the match with 49 kills and 22 errors in 126 attack attempts.
Peter Hibbeler finished with nine kills to lead Fontbonne (3-5 overall, 0-2 MCVL). The Griffins finished with 27 kills and 18 errors in 113 attack attempts (.080 attack percentage).
The Muskies are next in action in one week on Feb. 14 when they travel to face Benedictine (Ill.) University at 2 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
