Fellow Wauwatosa West High School graduates
Alec Redlich (
Sr.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) and
Matt Stolz (
So.-Wauwatosa, Wis.) combined for 33 kills and the Lakeland College men's volleyball team handled Benedictine (Ill.) University in four sets Wednesday night at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies defeated the Eagles 25-19, 25-12, 29-31, 25-16, getting back over the .500 mark at 10-9 overall and also improving to 5-3 in the Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League. Lakeland also swept both regular season meetings with Benedictine, which is in its first year as a varsity program and dropped to 4-11 overall and 2-6 in the MCVL.
Redlich had 18 kills and Stolz added 15 more to lead the attack that was relentless in the first two sets, hit a rough spot in the third set and then got back to work to clinch the match in the fourth. Lakeland hit .200 for the night with 53 kills and 25 errors in 140 attempts, but that final total included wild swings.
The Muskies hit .278 in the first set and then swung at an outstanding .667 rate in the second set with 12 kills and zero errors in 18 attempts. Lakeland struggled in the third set, though, hitting .000 with 14 kills and 14 errors, before finishing with 12 kills and six errors (.146) in the final set.
The Muskies also were good defensively, with four players finishing with at least 10 digs plus 14 total blocks.
Cole Aiazzi (
Sr.-Yerington, Nev.) finished with 18 digs,
Jordan Smith (
Sr.-Channahon, Ill.) had 12 and Stolz and
Kyle Krogstad (
Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) added 11 each.
The block was led by
Tim Robbins (
So.-Wheaton, Ill.) who came into the night leading NCAA Division III in total blocks and added to his total with seven (one solo, six assisted). Smith added five blocks (two solo, three assisted) and
Casey Bolda (
So.-Honolulu, Hawaii) added four blocks (two solo, two assisted).
Benedictine hit .028 for the match, with 36 kills and 32 errors in 143 attempts, and that number included negative hitting marks in the second and fourth sets. Sterling Glover led the Eagles with 11 kills and also added 10 digs.
The Muskies are home again Friday night when they host Calumet College-St. Joseph (Ind.) at 5 p.m. and Rivier (N.H.) University at 7:30 p.m.
