Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. –
Rosa Gonzalez (
So.-Elwood, Ill.) drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice and the Lakeland College softball team opened the day with a 5-4 win over Alvernia (Pa.) University Thursday morning.
The Muskies completed a sweep of the day by following that with a 5-1 defeat of Roger Williams (R.I.) University. Lakeland stayed hot on the fourth day of games on its spring break trip by posting two wins and has now won five of its last six games and is over the .500 mark for the season at 7-5 overall.
The Muskies held on to win the opener by fighting back after Alvernia rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game. Lakeland had taken the lead on a sacrifice fly by
Sarah Seaton (
Fr.-Stoughton, Wis.) in the first inning, retook it on another sac fly by
Caten Teff (
Jr.-Alpena, Mich.) in the second and added back-to-back run-scoring singles by
Meghan Etten (
Fr.-Elkhorn, Wis.) and
Calie Delisi (
So.-Oak Forest, Ill.) in the third, only to see the Crusaders come back with three to tie it.
Lakeland took the lead back in the bottom of the sixth.
Sami Jo Williams (
Jr.-Sussex, Wis.) led off the inning with a triple, and she scored two batters later by beating the throw home after Gonzalez's grounder on the infield. The Muskies then closed it out in the seventh as
Savannah Stenlund (
So.-Rapid River, Mich.) retired the side in order to pick up the win in relief.
Stenlund also was the star in the second game against Roger Williams, pitching a complete game and allowing just three hits and one unearned run while striking out four. She also benefitted from a balanced offense which rapped out 12 hits and had five different players drive in runs.
Rylee Garand (
Fr.-Punta Gorda, Fla.) and
Carly Brault (
So.-Brillion, Wis.) both drove in runs in the second, with Garand getting Lakeland on the board with an RBI single and Brault sending in
Hailey Jester (
So.-Salem, Wis.) on a fielder's choice. Jester then made it 3-0 in the third inning with an RBI single to score Gonzalez.
The Muskies added on two more runs in the fifth.
Molly Talaska (
Jr.-Oswego, Ill.) scored Etten with a ground out to second to make it 4-0, and Delisi reached on an error two batters later to score Jester.
Lakeland wraps up its spring trip on Friday with two more games. The Muskies face Emmanuel (Mass.) College at noon Central time and then will take on Wesley (Del.) College at 2 p.m.
