LISLE, Ill. –
Brandon Glaeser (
Sr.-Newton, Wis.) singled in the winning run with the bases loaded to give the Lakeland College baseball team a 9-8 win over Benedictine (Ill.) University in 11 innings in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies won their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference season opener playing in their home away from home for the day. The Eagles bounced back in the second game to win 8-0 to gain a split of the twinbill in games where Lakeland (4-9 overall, 1-1 NACC) was the designated home team in games regularly scheduled for Sheboygan but moved to Benedictine's field due to weather and field conditions.
Glaeser singled on a 1-2 count to score pinch runner
Cameron Sharp (
Fr.-Pflugerville, Texas) with the winning run and cap a banner day at the plate. The senior shortstop finished the first game with a career-best three hits and also scored a run in helping the Muskies rally from an early 5-2 deficit.
Connor Hilburn (
Fr.-Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) also added three hits and drove in four runs and
Bryce Skelton (
Sr.-Delavan, Wis.) reached on hits three times.
Travis Regalado (
Fr.-Willcox, Ariz.) and
Drew Richard (
So.-Kieler, Wis.) added two hits apiece, and Richard's single down the left field line in the eighth inning tied the game at 6-6 and was part of a four-run eighth inning before Benedictine (6-6 overall, 1-1 NACC) tied the game with two in the top of the ninth.
Ryan Oharriz (
Fr.-Pembroke Pines, Fla.) was the fourth pitcher of the day for Lakeland and pitched the 11th inning in relief, allowing a hit but facing the minimum to get his first collegiate win.
The Eagles got the early jump in the second game with a run in the first and then blew it open with five runs in the fourth inning. Benedictine pounded out 18 hits in the game against Muskies' pitchers
Jeremy Surowiec (
Fr.-Lowell, Ind.) and
Joey McFeely (
Fr.-Chicago, Ill.).
Glaeser added two hits in the second game but Benedictine starter Frank Greco was dominant, scattering six hits over eight innings while striking out 10. Lakeland put nine runners on base via six hits plus three Eagles errors but never advanced a runner past second base.
Weather permitting, the Muskies will be home Tuesday to host Lawrence University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
