The Lakeland University women's volleyball team put together one of its cleanest performances of the season and handled Alverno College in three quick sets Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies bounced back from a Friday night loss with a Saturday win for the third straight week, needing just 58 minutes to defeat the inferno 25-17, 25-10, 25-16. The Muskies won their final regular season home match and took a step towards qualifying for the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament, improving to 4-4 in league play and 9-16 overall.
Lakeland totaled 32 kills with just eight errors in 76 attacks for a .316 hitting percentage, the team's fourth-best mark of the season. The Muskies also made sure Alverno (6-16 overall, 1-7 NACC) was unable to string together many runs, finishing with a 75% sideout rate.
The Muskies trailed briefly at the start of all three sets but otherwise were in control, building substantial leads in all three sets. That was especially true in the second set, when the Muskies answered Alverno's first point with an 8-0 run, and then finished the set on another 7-0 run.
Shannon Bishop (
So.-River Grove, Ill.) paced the attack with eight kills, with
Shelby Welsh (
Jr.-Ogallala, Neb.) adding six kills.
Neenah Primas (
Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) set the offense with 17 assists,
Emma Bruder (
Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) finished with 10 digs, and
Emilie Schartner (
Jr.-Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) also added eight digs and two service aces.
Cailey Jeske led Alverno with a match-high 10 kills. The Inferno hit .031 for the match with 24 kills but 21 errors in 96 attempts.
The Muskies take to the road Wednesday for a non-conference match against the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. in Oshkosh.
