Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Muskies rout Huntingdon, split two matches to open Music City Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Shelby Block (Sheboygan, Wis.) delivered 10 kills in her second collegiate match and the Lakeland University women's volleyball team handled Huntingdon (Ala.) College in three sets Friday afternoon at the Music City Classic.

The Muskies swept the Hawks 25-12, 25-19, 25-16 to get their first win of the season in their second match Friday. Lakeland earlier was defeated by Wartburg (Iowa) College in three sets 25-22, 25-14, 25-14 in its first match of the day and its 2017 season opener.

A freshman outside hitter from Sheboygan North High School, Block keyed a very efficient attack against Huntingdon, leading the way with 10 kills and just two errors in 18 attempts (.444 hitting percentage). As a team, the Muskies hit .348 for the match with 41 kills and just 10 errors in 88 attempts, and never trailed against the Hawks until falling behind twice briefly early in the third set.

Shannon Bishop (So.-River Grove, Ill.) also notched eight kills, while freshman Neenah Primas (Oostburg, Wis.) posted 19 assists from the setter spot. Emma Bruder (Jr.-Frankfort, Ill.) led the defense with nine digs.

The opener against Wartburg was a different story, as Lakeland hit just .018 with almost as many errors (21) as kills (23). Brittini Scoles (Sr.-Kewaskum, Wis.) finished with seven kills but was the only Muskie with more than five as the Knights took firm control as the match went on.

The Muskies had a chance to pull out the first set, cutting a late five-point deficit down to 22-21 after a pair of Wartburg attack errors. The Knights would record kills on the next two points, though, and closed it out after a Lakeland attack error at 24-22.

The Muskies still got the jump in the second set with an early 8-3 lead, but Wartburg roared back with 14 of the next 17 points and cruised to the set win. Lakeland only led 1-0 in the third before the Knights again pulled away to win.

Primas passed out 10 assists in the first match while fellow freshman Taylor Bubolz (Howards Grove, Wis.) added eight assists. Bruder totaled 10 digs and Allison Errthum (Sr.-Joliet, Ill.) added nine digs.

Lakeland is in action again Saturday when it faces Huntingdon and Wartburg again, first meeting the Hawks at noon and then taking on the Knights at 2 p.m.
