Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lakeland makes its move late again to defeat Cougars

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Carlos Campos (So.-Janesville, Wis.) and Pat McDonald (Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) combined for 46 points and the Lakeland University men's basketball team defeated Concordia University Chicago Saturday afternoon at Geiseman Gymnasium.

Campos scored 26 points and McDonald added 20 as the Muskies won their second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game of the week. Lakeland once again made the plays down the stretch and closed the game out with good shooting at the free-throw line to improve to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in NACC play, surpassing its overall win total for all of last season.

The Muskies trailed by one with just over 11 minutes left in the game but outscored the Cougars 16-6 over the next five minutes to gain the advantage down the stretch. McDonald had eight points in the run and Campos capped it with a pair of free throws to make it 68-59 with 5:57 left.

Lakeland never led by less than six points the rest of the way and salted the game away at the line in the final two minutes. The Muskies hit nine straight and 9 of 10 overall at the stripe, including four each by McDonald and Eric Nygaard (Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.).

Campos scored 15 points in the second half and McDonald added 14 as Lakeland prevailed in a game that was close almost the entire way until the final few minutes. The Muskies led by eight early in the first and second halves but Concordia (1-11 overall, 0-8 NACC) closed back up both times, tying it on two occasions in the first half and trailing just 34-32 at halftime before also coming back early in the second half.

Lakeland shot just 37.5% as a team, making 27 of 72 shots, including 8 of 26 from three-point range. The Muskies made 25 of 32 shots from the line, though, held the Cougars to just 37.3% shooting (25 of 67) and also took advantage of 17 Concordia turnovers while committing just 10 of their own.

Campos made four three-pointers and McDonald added three plus five rebounds and four steals. Nygaard also scored 11 points off the bench. Zach Hasenstein (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and Shakur Jinad (So.-Chicago, Ill.) also scored nine points each.

Justin Schwarz led the Cougars with 23 points and Mitch Pelissier added 19 and during the game went over 1,000 points for his career. Justin Mack also posted a game-high 12 rebounds and Jonathan Wilson added 11 boards.

Lakeland is back home on Tuesday when it welcomes Rockford University for a 5 p.m. tip-off at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
