A tie felt almost as good as a win for the Lakeland University women's soccer team as it battled through injuries and a tough opponent to play Aurora University to a scoreless tie Saturday night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies earned their first point in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play, holding firm despite the Spartans finishing with a 19-5 advantage in shot attempts. Lakeland also did some damage to Aurora's NACC Tournament hopes, keeping the guests from a needed win through 110 minutes of play.
Erin Tomlinson (
Fr.-Madison, Wis.) made nine saves in goal for Lakeland (4-10-2 overall, 0-7-1 NACC) and also weathered Aurora's 18-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The closest the two teams came to breaking through was in the 56th minute, when Giselle Torres hit a shot that went off the crossbar. Jasmine Ascencio then followed with a rebound but shot wide.
The Muskies' lone shot on goal came in the second overtime, when
Hope Cerney (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.) shot but was stopped by Taylor Joiner. Cerney took all five of Lakeland's shot attempts throughout the game.
The teams also played the final 39 minutes, 31 seconds at 11-on-10 after Aurora's Emma Aguilar received a red card in the 71st minute. The Spartans (4-7-2 overall, 3-4-1 NACC) still finished with five of their nine shots on goal over the two overtime periods.
The Muskies competed with just 13 players due to injuries to the roster. The match also was Senior Night for Lakeland seniors
Stephanie Figueroa (
Round Lake Park, Ill.) and
Marissa Brakob (
Slinger, Wis.).
