Katie Hoefgen scored four goals and added two assists and Illinois Institute of Technology scored four times in each half in defeating the Lakeland University women's soccer team 8-0 Wednesday night at Taylor Field.
The banged up Muskies lost their final home game of the season to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's newest member. Lakleand dropped to 4-11-2 overall and 0-8-1 in the NACC with two matches on the road left this season.
In its first season in the NACC, Illinois Tech has stepped in and become one of the league's top teams, and the Scarlet Hawks (13-2-1 overall, 8-1 NACC) showed their power against the Muskies. Hoefgen reached a hat trick in the first 15 minutes, scoring the first three goals of the match, and then added another goal plus two assists in the second half, giving her 10 points for the night.
Jamie Griggs added two second half goals for Illinois Tech and Cosette Thompson finished with a pair of assists. The Scarlet Hawks' four second-half tallies came over a span of 7 minutes, 11 seconds early in the half.
Lakeland again played with a short roster that included just two substitutes, plus several starters playing through injuries. The Muskies finished with two shots, the first coming from
Elizabeth Siebert (
Jr.-Mount Pulaski, Ill.) from the left side late in the first half, the second from
Skylar Garza (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) in the first half.
Erin Tomlinson (
Fr.-Madison, Wis.) faced frequent attacks by the visitors and made eight saves in goal. Illinois Tech finished with a 25-2 advantage in shot attempts and also added an 8-1 margin in corner kicks.
Lakeland is on the road Saturday when it travels to face Alverno College at 1 p.m. in Milwaukee.
