Edgewood turns back Lakeland despite Borts’ goal

MADISON – Jenna Borts (So.-Oak Creek, Wis.) scored on a free kick but the Lakeland University women's soccer team came up just short as Edgewood College held on for a 3-1 win Wednesday night at Breese Stevens Field.

Borts drilled a free kick home from 30 yards out in the 53rd minute to get the Muskies on the board and within 2-1. Lakeland was unable to get a tying goal across, though, and Edgewood added an insurance goal in the final three minutes in claiming the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.

The Eagles scored twice in the first half, including a first goal by Aubrey Tarmann just 3:33 into the match. Mari Hubanks assisted on that goal and on the second one by Carrie Radomsky in the 33rd minute that gave the hosts a 2-0 lead.

Borts scored her second goal of the season as the Muskies (4-8-1 overall, 0-5 NACC) cut Edgewood's lead in half. The score stayed that way much of the rest of the way, even as Lakeland recorded five of its seven shots in the second 45 minutes. Borts had two more shots and two others were blocked

The Eagles (1-8-1 overall, 1-4 NACC) scored a final goal with 2:31 left in regulation, with Hubanks scoring in the same fashion as Borts did, striking a free kick that found the net.

Edgewood finished with a healthy 36-7 advantage in shot attempts, including 24-2 in the first half. Grace Daehling (So.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made seven saves in the first half before Erin Tomlinson (Fr.-Madison, Wis.) came on in the second half and stopped five shots.

Lakeland finished with three shots on goal, with Stephanie Figueroa (Sr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) and Hope Cerney (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) both getting chances that were stopped by Eagles keeper Grace Wildeboer.

The Muskies are back home Saturday when they welcome Benedictine University for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Taylor Field.
