MILWAUKEE –
Carlos Campos (
So.-Janesville, Wis.) scored 29 points to lead six players in double figures and the Lakeland University men's basketball team's offensive machine kept humming along with a 109-90 win over Concordia University Chicago Saturday at the Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Muskies moved to the doorstep of an NACC Tournament spot with their third straight win, this coming with another big scoring performance. Lakeland topped the 100-point mark for the third time this season with its third straight hot shooting game, once again hitting 50% from the field.
The Muskies (14-7 overall, 11-6 NACC) scored 59 first half points on the strength of 10 three-pointers, breaking away from the stubborn Cougars midway through the first half and staying a step ahead the rest of the way.
Campos scored 21 of his 29 points in the first 20 minutes, draining four three-pointers. He scored eight points and
Zach Hasenstein (
Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) added nine more as the Muskies' went on a 23-8 spree over a span of just over five minutes to take a 42-27 lead with still more than seven minutes left in the first half.
Concordia (2-19 overall, 1-15 NACC) continued to hang around and got back within 63-57 early in the second half when Mitch Pelissier scored on a layup, part of his 28 points. The Cougars were still down just 10 when Jonathan Wilson scored to make it 94-84 with 5 minutes, 20 seconds to play, before Campos hit another three-pointer to start a 7-0 run to put the Muskies over 100 points and put the game away.
Lakeland made 40 of 80 field goals, including 14 of 31 from three-point range plus 15 of 17 free throws (88.2%). All five starters scored in double figures including
Shakur Jinad (
So.-Chicago, Ill.) with 18 points, Hasenstein and Pat McDonald (Jr.-Port Washington, Wis.) with 16 and
Joshuan McNeal (
Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) adding 10.
Eric Nygaard (
Jr.-Plymouth, Wis.) also scored 12 points off the bench.
Concordia made 33 of 71 shots from the field (46.5%) and also finished with four players in double figures. The Cougars also outrebounded Lakeland 45-36 but committed 21 turnovers to the Muskies' 10.
The Muskies take to the road for their next two games, starting with a trip to face Rockford University Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Rockford, Ill.
