SUPERIOR, Wis. – Lakeland University and the University of Wisconsin-Superior played 110 minutes and settled for a scoreless tie Sunday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer match.
The Muskies gained a draw on the second day of their season-opening two-day swing to Minnesota and then northern Wisconsin. Lakeland came out of the trip without a loss after also defeating North Central (Minn.) University on Saturday.
The Muskies generated little attack until coming alive midway through the second half. Lakeland's first shot attempt came in the 64th minute when
Skylar Garza (
Fr.-Hartford, Wis.) shot wide, but from that point on the Muskies outshot the Yellowjackets 10-9, including shots on goal late in regulation by
Rachel Hasko (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.),
Jenna Borts (
So.-Oak Creek, Wis.) and
Hope Cerney (
So.-Green Bay, Wis.).
UW-Superior (0-1-1) had the better opportunities, including in the first half when Annah Schussman hit the crossbar, and a rebound shot by Sarah Fjeran was saved by Muskies keeper
Erin Tomlinson (
Fr.-Madison, Wis.). The Yellowjackets also hit the crossbar again in overtime on a shot by Liza Shelquist, but Lakeland held on for the tie with Tomlinson making three saves in the second 10-minute overtime period.
Tomlinson finished making five saves for her first collegiate shutout. Borts, Cerney and Garza all attempted three shots each to lead the offensive attack. Morgan Philliber and Linnea Bollum combined to save five shots for the shutout for UW-Superior, which finished with a 15-10 overall advantage in shots.
Lakeland next will face Maranatha Baptist University on Tuesday in a non-conference match, which will now serve as the Muskies' home opener. Due to heavy rains making for unplayable field conditions, the game has been moved from MBU's home field in Watertown to Lakeland's John Taylor Memorial Field, and now will begin at 7 p.m.
