Alexis Peterson scored a goal and added three assists and Marian University defeated the Lakeland University women's soccer team 8-0 Wednesday night at Taylor Field in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match.
The Sabres scored four times in both halves, keeping the heat on and taking advantage of opportunities to get their first conference win this season. Five different players scored goals and Marian defeated the Muskies for the 10th straight time.
The visitors got on the board less than seven minutes into the match. Riley Louko also had a hand in four goals for Marian, and her cross to Olivia Meerdink opened the scoring six minutes, 50 seconds into the match.
The Sabres (4-6 overall, 1-2 NACC) scored again after Alicia Balken scored off Peterson's cross right in front of the goal in the 16th minute, and the Muskies gave some help less than 10 minutes later with an own goal to make it 3-0. Peterson then scored in the 29th minute, collecting a turnover and firing a long shot from 20 yards out to make it 4-0.
Balken added a goal early in the second half, Louko scored twice late, and Meghan Batzner also added a goal off a corner kick by Peterson in the 63rd minute.
Lakeland (4-6-1 overall, 0-3 NACC) had a few opportunities early, including a shot on goal by
Meagan Simmons (
Jr.-Troy, Ill.) in the eighth minute.
Amanda Buckler (
Fr.-Sheridan, Wyo.) and
Rachel Hasko (
Jr.-Racine, Wis.) also were in the middle of the action frequently for the Muskies, and Buckler had three shots, including a good chance in the 72nd minute.
Grace Daehling (
So.-Sun Prairie, Wis.) made made six saves in goal, several of the spectacular variety, before
Erin Tomlinson (
Fr.-Madison, Wis.) came on for the final 32 minutes and made one save while allowing two goals. Marian finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots, and Sabres keeper Amy Birner made three saves for the shutout.
Lakeland is home again Saturday when it welcomes Dominican University on Homecoming for a women's/men's doubleheader. The women's match will start at 5 p.m., with the men's match scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
