Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Muskies score in waves, roll past Regents for women’s soccer win

With a host of different players getting into the act, the Lakeland University women's soccer team scored quickly and from all angles in both halves in defeating Rockford University 9-1 Friday night at Taylor Field.

Rachel Hasko (Jr.-Racine, Wis.) and Stephanie Figueroa (Sr.-Round Lake Park, Ill.) scored two goals each and seven different players found the back of the net at least once for the Muskies, who improved to 2-1-1 overall. In all, nine different players recorded a point with at least a goal or an assist in Lakeland's biggest scoring outburst since scoring the same total in a 9-0 victory over Eureka (Ill.) College in the 2015 season opener.

Three goals each in both the first and second halves came in quick spurts, with the first three on the board in less than four minutes in the first half and three more over a period of 5 minutes 37 seconds.

The scoring started in the 15th minute when Amanda Buckler (Fr.-Sheridan, Wyo.) took several touches and then lifted a shot into the left corner for a 1-0 lead. Hope Cerney (So.-Green Bay, Wis.) followed less than three minutes later with her first goal of the season, and Hasko scored with an assist from Cerney just over a minute later to make it 3-0.

Freshman Emely Ortega (South Beloit, Ill.) got on the board with her first collegiate goal at 27:30 of the match with Cerney providing another assist. The Muskies then made it five goals in the first half just before halftime when Grace Daehling (So.-Sun Prairie, Wis.), a goalkeeper playing in the field for the first time collegiately, scored her first collegiate goal, tapping in off a pass from Tracey Sery (Fr.-Big Bend, Wis.).

Rockford (1-2 overall) responded to control possession a bit more in the second half and Lakeland was quiet until the 73rd minute when Hasko received a pass from Zeni Yacab (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) and unleashed a laser from 28 yards out for her second goal. Figueroa then got on the board with goals at 74:10 and 77:39 sandwiched around the Regents' lone goal scored by Erin DiSanti. The scoring wrapped up in the 86th minute when freshman Skylar Garza (Hartford, Wis.) received a centering pass from Daehling inside the 18 and scored her first collegiate goal.

Lakeland controlled play much of the night and finished with a 30-3 shot advantage. Goalkeeper Erin Tomlinson (Fr.-Madison, Wis.) had to make just one save to earn her second collegiate win. Rockford goalkeeper Samantha Bergeron made seven saves in defeat.

The Muskies return to play Sunday when they travel to Milwaukee to face Mount Mary University at 10 a.m.
