Series history: 7th meeting, UW-Stout leads 5-1
Lakeland and UW-Stout last met Dec. 30, 2010, when the Blue Devils posted an 84-74 win in De Pere in a tournament hosted by St. Norbert. Before that, the last previous meeting was Nov. 29, 1991, a 104-65 win for the Blue Devils at home in Menomonie. Stout has won the last five meetings, including the only game ever played at Lakeland, a 100-91 victory at the Sheboygan Armory March 4, 1969 as part of the NAIA District 14 playoffs. The teams have met sporadically in a series that dates back to 1966, when the Moose Woltzen-led Muskies picked up their lone win over the Blue Devils with a 76-69 victory on the road Feb. 28, also as part of the District 14 playoffs.
Lakeland last time out: Won at Finlandia (Mich.) 90-74 Tuesday
The Muskies picked up their play in the second half to score the road win in the Upper Peninsula for their first victory of the season. Lakeland outscored Finlandia 53-34 in the second half after trailing by three at halftime, taking the lead early in the second half during a string of four three-pointers in a span of just over two minutes.
Carlos Campos scored 29 points and
Eddie Burnett added career highs with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Isaac Anderson also added nine points and eight rebounds and
Sam Kaminski chipped in seven points plus eight rebounds as the Muskies bounced back after a lopsided loss to Carroll on Sunday.
UW-Stout last time out: Lost to Concordia Moorhead (Minn.) 92-90 Wednesday
The Blue Devils just missed out on completing a big comeback, falling in a high-scoring game at home. UW-Stout trailed 79-61 with 6 1/2 minutes left in the game but closed within one possession twice in the final minute before succumbing to the Cobbers. Luke Geiger scored 31 points and Jon Ciriacks added 21 points for the Blue Devils, who outrebounded Concordia 41-35 and forced 28 turnovers but saw the Cobbers shoot 57.1% from the field.
About the Blue Devils: UW-Stout enters at 0-2 this season after finishing 6-19 overall last year and placing eighth in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, annually one of the top NCAA Division III conferences. It was the first year for coach Jim Lake, who came to Menomonie after serving as an assistant at Ferris State (Mich.) and was an assistant when the Bulldogs won the 2018 NCAA Division II national championship. Three starters return from last year's squad, which went winless in the WIAC after a 6-4 start in non-conference play.
Young and green: The Muskies enter the season with a 22-player roster that includes 12 newcomers. Eleven of the 12 are freshmen-junior college transfer
Greg Barber is the lone upperclassman in the bunch-and along with the return of
Eddie Burnett this year, only nine players are back from last year's team. Only
Zach Hasenstein (23 games),
Carlos Campos (16) and
Jequan Pegeese (eight) started games last year.
Senior highs-and again: Lakeland senior center
Sam Kaminski has already posted four career highs in just two games this year. Kaminski set career bests with six points and seven rebounds in the opener against Carroll, and then topped both of those with seven points and eight rebounds Tuesday against Finlandia.
