Muskies look for a breakthrough against Falcons in NACC semis

Lakeland/CUW WVB Notes   PDF

Two of the three Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season women's volleyball co-champions will face off in the postseason when Lakeland University takes on Concordia University Wisconsin Thursday night at 7 p.m. at CUW's R. John Buuck Fieldhouse in Mequon.

The third-seeded Muskies will face the No. 2 seed Falcons in the semifinals with a trip to the tournament's championship match on the line. The winner will face the winner of the other semifinal between No. 4 Dominican and top seed Aurora, with that match taking place Saturday at the home court of the highest seed.

Lakeland will meet Concordia in the NACC tourney for the third time ever and the first time since 2013. The Muskies are 2-0 against CUW all-time in the tourney, and their five-set win in the 2013 NACC quarterfinals was also their last win over the Falcons, who come in having won seven straight over Lakeland. The Muskies also are looking to advance to the championship match for the first time since winning the 2009 NACC Tournament.

Lakeland (19-14 overall) moved on in the NACC tourney with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of No. 6 seed Benedictine on Tuesday at the Woltzen Gymnasium. Shannon Bishop run up 11 kills, Abby Baumgartner finished with eight kills plus 12 digs and Sydney Pingitore added 11 digs plus three service aces.

Concordia (21-8 overall) received a first round bye in the NACC tourney and most recently finished out its regular season with two wins at the Wisconsin Lutheran Warrior Invitational this past Saturday. The Falcons defeated Elmhurst (Ill.) and Simpson (Iowa), rebounding from a three-set loss to Wisconsin Lutheran in their NACC regular season finale.
