Legendary Lakeland basketball player Waymon Stewart had his No. 54 retired at halftime of Lakeland's men's basketball game on Saturday, Feb. 16.
Â
Stewart and former Lakeland football great Pat Curran are the first two athletes in the long, successful history of Lakeland athletics to have their numbers retired. Curran's No. 33 was retired last fall at halftime of the Homecoming football game.
Â
Framed jerseys with the No. 33 and 54 are on display in the trophy case in the Wehr Center lobby.
Â
Stewart, a 1969 Lakeland graduate and member of the Lakeland Athletics Hall of Fame, was a four-year all-conference basketball standout, a third team All-American selection and NAIA All-District honoree. He was named the Muskies top basketball player of the first 50 years of the institution's intercollegiate athletics program.
Â
His 1,974 points is third best in Lakeland history, and he is the career rebounds leader with 1,748 rebounds. He still holds school single-game records of 55 points and 39 rebounds.
Â
He is the only Lakeland player to be selected in the NBA Draft, as he was taken by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969 as the 69
th overall pick. The Bucks also had the No. 1 pick that year, and they selected the legendary Lew Alcindor.
Â
The Muskies won 89 of 112 games during Stewart's career, and he helped lead the 1965-66 team to NAIA Nationals in Kansas City, where the Muskies lost in the second round to top seed Central State, 72-68. The Muskies upset No. 16 Linfield, 95-81, in the opening round.
