The Lakeland University football team will play on the road for the first time this season when it travels to face Kalamazoo College on Saturday for a Noon Central time kickoff at Angell Stadium.
The Muskies will try again for their first win after being idle last week. Lakeland (0-1 overall) has had some time off since falling to Carroll 44-34 in its season opener on Sept. 7, a game when
Larry Rivers (
Jr.-Dearborn Heights, Mich.) rushed for a career-high 276 yards and the Muskies built a 27-16 halftime lead but scored just seven points in the second half.
Kalamazoo (1-1 overall) comes in with two games already under its belt. The Hornets were defeated by Greenville (Ill.) 31-17 last week in their second straight road game to start the season. Kalamazoo finished with twice as many first downs as the Panthers (an 18-9 advantage) and outgained the hosts 312-271, but converted just 3 of 15 third downs and also committed four turnovers.
The Muskies and Hornets will square off as part of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (MIAA-NACC) Challenge, the eighth straight year of the scheduling alliance that has all eight teams from both leagues matched against a school from the opposing conference. The teams met in the first year of the Challenge in 2012, a 31-24 Kalamazoo win at Lakeland's Taylor Field in what was also the most recent meeting between the schools. The Hornets lead the all-time series 2-0, having won the other previous meeting 45-7 in 1991.
