Lakeland/UW-Platteville game notes
Lakeland University wraps up its pre-conference schedule with a challenging tune-up when it hosts the University of Wisconsin-Platteville for a 6 p.m. kickoff Saturday night at Taylor Field.
The Muskies (1-1 overall) will face the Pioneers (2-0 overall) for the fourth straight year and host a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team for just the second time since 2007. Lakeland also be aiming for its first win over a WIAC team since 2002, when the Muskies had a loss at UW-Oshkosh reversed later in the season by a forfeit.
Lakeland comes in with some momentum after a 28-7 win over Kalamazoo College on the road last week in Michigan.
Charl'Tez Nunnery (Jr.-Liberty, Miss.) rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another in leading four straight touchdown drives to start the second half as Lakeland broke open a game that was scoreless at halftime. The Muskies' defense also held the Hornets scoreless until the game's final two minutes and allowed just 41 yards on the ground and 242 yards of total offense.
UW-Platteville also won last week, trouncing NAIA member Thomas More (Ky.) 41-10 in Platteville. Colin Schuetz passed for 228 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair to Donald Allender. Platteville built a 34-0 lead by halftime, scoring touchdowns on five of its final six drives of the half, and also limited the Saints to 83 yards of offense in the first half.
The Pioneers lead the all-time series 4-1 and have defeated the Muskies each of the last four years, including a 49-12 win last season in Platteville. Lakeland's lone win over UWP came in the teams' first-ever meeting in 1998 with a 21-14 victory on the then-grass surface at Taylor Field.
