Series history: 71st meeting, Lakeland leads 40-30
This is the 71st meeting all-time between Lakeland and Wisconsin Lutheran, as the two have met regularly in a series that dates back only to 1982. The Muskies hold the series lead but the Warriors have won five of the last seven meetings. That includes a the lone matchup last season in Milwaukee on Jan. 23, 2019, when WLC won a high-scoring 100-90 game. Lakeland did sweep Lutheran two seasons ago, however, including the last time the Warriors traveled to Woltzen Gymnasium when the Muskies prevailed 95-79 on Dec. 6, 2017. Then-sophomore
Carlos Campos had a team-high 19 points, including three three-pointers, in the victory.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Marian 95-59 Saturday
The Muskies completed the season sweep of the Sabres to earn their second straight conference win. Lakeland jumped out to a double-digit lead less than six minutes into the game and never looked back, shooting over 50% from the field for the game and 53% from three in the second half. The Muskies also made 14 of 15 shots inside the three-point arc in the first half. Twelve different players scored for the Muskies, with
Jequan Pegeese and
Tylan Huff leading with 16 points each.
Eric Jordan tacked on 13 points, and
Tony White notched nine points with three steals.
Wisconsin Lutheran last time out: Defeated Aurora 95-86 Saturday
The Warriors also secured a season sweep Saturday as they defeated the Spartans in Milwaukee. Aurora got off to a quick start with a 12-2 run, but Wisconsin Lutheran ended the half with a 14-2 run to take a 42-36 lead at halftime. The Spartans cut that lead to three with 10:48 left in the game, but Wisconsin Lutheran regained control after several free throw conversions and kept the lead to seven or more the rest of the way. Andrew Bruggink set a career high for the second straight game, scoring 38 points one game after he had scored a career-best 37. Drew Bernhagen also added 19 points off the bench.
About the Warriors: Wisconsin Lutheran is in a tie for second place with Benedictine in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with a 10-2 record and a 13-4 record overall. The Warriors have been the surprise of the conference, already surpassing their overall win total from last year when they finished 12-13 overall and 10-10 in conference. Lutheran has performed well above expectations as it was picked to miss the conference tournament and finish eighth in the NACC prior to the season. Last season, the Warriors missed the playoffs for the second straight season and finished as part of a four-way tie for sixth place that also included Lakeland.
Muskie fans will recognize the Warriors' third-year coach, as Aaron Aanonsen previously served as head coach at Lakeland for nine seasons and with 137 wins is the second-winningest coach in school history. Lakeland head coach
Sam Schroeder played for Aanonsen and later was an assistant coach under him before taking over for him in 2017. Aanonsen's Warriors have a high-scoring offense as they average a NACC-best 86.6 points per game and Bruggink leads individual players in the conference with 23.9 points per game.
