Vanderwaal sets single-match kill mark but Lakeland falls at Concordia in five

MEQUON, Wis. – Nate Vanderwaal (Sr.-Rockford, Ill.) took sole possession of the school's single-match record for kills but the Lakeland University men's volleyball team lost a tight five-set match at Concordia University Wisconsin Friday night.

The two teams traded sets throughout the match before Concordia Wisconsin claimed a 25-21, 26-28, 25-19, 23-25, 15-5 victory. The match was close throughout with 38 ties and 15 lead changes before the Falcons ultimately prevailed. The win gave Concordia its second Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference win and bumped its overall record to 7-4, while the Muskies were left still searching for their first conference win after dropping to 4-12 overall and 0-3 in the NACC.

Vanderwaal set the Lakeland varsity program record at the end of the third set, eclipsing the career-high 23 he recorded against Adrian on Feb. 1 that tied him with Matt Stolz atop the Lakeland record books. In the second set, Vanderwaal amassed a whopping 13 kills that put him in good position to break the record.

After Concordia won a first set where neither team led by more than four points, the Muskies got off to a strong start in the second set. Lakeland forced the Falcons to call a timeout midway through the set following a kill from Cameron Ekum (Jr.-Wales, Wis.) that put the Muskies up 13-7. Concordia responded by outscoring the Muskies 17-10 to take a 24-23 lead, putting them on the cusp of a 2-0 lead in the match. A kill from Vanderwaal held off the Falcons, and the two teams traded points before a kill and a service ace from Matt Misheck (Jr.-Oak Forest, Ill.) finished the 28-26 set and tied the match at one.

Another late run from the hosts gave CUW a 25-19 win to spoil Vanderwaal's record-breaking set, but Lakeland rallied from a 21-19 deficit in the fourth set to force a fifth set. Concordia got off to a hot start, scoring the first four points of the final frame, and never trailed in the match again as the Falcons rode a 10-2 run to victory.

Ben Miller joined Vanderwaal in setting a new career high with 15 kills while adding 13 digs. Ekum had a match-high 44 assists, and Maui Viola (Jr.-Gurnee, Ill.) set a match high for digs with 17.

James Althoff led the Falcons with 16 kills, and Matthew Korman assisted on 38 kills. The Falcons had 16 team blocks, including eight from Andy Ellingham and seven from Blake Schwandt.

The Muskies look for their first NACC victory of the season next Friday when they host Benedictine University at the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
