CLERMONT, Fla. –
Lindsay Cudecki (
Sr.-Chicago, Ill.) pitched a three-hit shutout and
Elizabeth Groonwald (
So.-Hartford, Wis.) drove in the lone run of the game as the Lakeland University softball team defeated Marywood (Pa.) University 1-0 Thursday at the PFX Spring Games.
The Muskies again salvaged a split of two games on the fourth day of their spring break trip, winning the second game after falling to Montclair State (N.J.) University 12-3 in their first game.
Lakeland is now 3-5 and is scheduled to close its spring break trip with two games Friday morning. Lakeland University also announced on Thursday that in conjunction with other measures being taken in response to the COVID-19 virus, all Muskies athletics competitions will be suspended through Sunday, April 12, beginning at the conclusion of spring break trips for the softball and baseball teams.
Cudecki allowed just three hits and threw her second career shutout, striking out two and walking two. She won a pitcher's duel with Marywood's Cait Becher, as the two combined to allow just seven hits.
The Muskies finished with just four hits of their own but manufactured a run in the second inning.
Madi Olson (
Sr.-Eau Claire, Wis.) walked to lead off the inning and
Jacy Klaske (
So.-Fond du Lac, Wis.) came on to pinch run.
Sydney Wickman (
Jr.-Quinnesec, Mich.) then reached on a bunt and Cudecki sacrificed the runners to second and third. Groonwald followed with a grounder to second that scored Klaske, and the run stood up the rest of the way.
The Pacers (3-3 overall) put runners on in five of seven innings, including benefitting from three Lakeland errors. Marywood's closest threat came in the third when it put a runner at third base with two outs, but Cudecki induced Sam Baltrusaitis into a fly out to end the inning.
Wickman finished with two of Lakeland's four hits. Groonwald and
Cheyenne Mathas (
So.-St. John, Ind.) also both added hits, including Groonwald hitting her first career hit in addition to posting her first collegiate RBI.
Lakeland had a tougher time in its first game, when Montclair State (9-0 overall) blew the game open with a huge second inning. The Red Hawks scored nine times in the bottom of the second and 12 times in all in the first three innings on the way to ending the game in five innings on account of the eight-run rule.
The Muskies had a ray of hope early when they scored three times in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.
Ariana Brown (
Fr.-Beloit, Wis.) doubled to drive in Wickman to tie the game, and Mathas followed later with a two-run double to score Brown and
Katie Keserich (
Fr.-Mokena, Ill.) to give Lakeland a 3-1 lead. It would be short-lived, as Montclair State scored nine runs on nine hits in the bottom of the second, sending 14 hitters to the plate in taking a 10-3 lead.
Mathas and
Juliana Hall (
Fr.-Portage, Ind.) both finished with two hits each for the Muskies. Groonwald and
Hannah Verhunce (
Fr.-Theresa, Wis.) combined to allow 12 runs, with Verhunce posting a pair of strikeouts.
Lakeland will conclude its Florida trip Friday when it takes on North Central (Minn.) University at 9 a.m. Eastern time (8 a.m. Central) and Washington (Md.) College at 11:15 a.m. Eastern, 10:15 Central.
