Muskies open baseball season in Florida with rout of Kangaroos

Box Score FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lakeland University's baseball season got off to a powerful start as the Muskies defeated the State University of New York-Canton Kangaroos 19-1 Saturday morning to open play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Muskies dominated in all areas in their opener, scoring in seven of the nine innings and hammering out 18 hits offensively while three Lakeland pitchers held SUNY Canton (0-1) to a single run.

Eleven Muskies recorded a hit in the game and six had multi-hit games led by Hunter Garling (Jr.-Perkins, Mich.), who went 3-for-6 with two doubles, a triple, four runs batted in and three runs scored. Nathan Hemmerling (So.-Riverside, Calif.) also had two doubles on the day as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and four runs scored.

Collin Schutz (Jr.-Saint Amant, La.) hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run bomb in the seventh inning. Trevor Meier (Sr.-Columbus, Mont.) chipped in two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, Mason Valenstein (So.-Sheboygan, Wis.) added two hits and Tyler LaMack (Fr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) went 2-for-4 in his first collegiate game.

Hemmerling had an equally impressive debut on the mound as he struck out 12 Roos hitters in 5 2/3 innings of work, surrendering just one run on four hits and three walks to pick up his first win of the season. Caleb Jones (Fr.-Madisonville, Ky.) picked up the final out of the sixth inning in his first collegiate pitching appearance and Jack Banks (Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) pitched a scoreless final three innings, striking out five and allowing four hits and one walk.

The Muskies continue their spring break trip in Fort Myers, Fla., with a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham (N.J.) Sunday morning at 9 a.m. local time in Florida, 8 a.m. Central time.
