Hunt, Aragon post wins as Lakeland opens men’s wrestling campaign

Concordia Duals results

MEQUON, Wis. – Garret Hunt (Sr.-Corvallis, Mont.) and David Aragon (So.-West Allis, Wis.) both scored a pair of victories on the mat to lead the Lakeland University men's wrestling team as it opened the season with duals hosted by Concordia University Wisconsin.

Hunt posted two pins at 285 pounds while Aragon earned two high-scoring decisions at 174 lbs. to highlight the Muskies' first competition in a season delayed over two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The two combined for four of Lakeland's seven wins on the mat over four duals in the team's debut under first-year head coach Ben Rosen.

The Muskies finished with a 0-4 record on the day in duals against College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin competition. Lakeland fell to Wheaton (Ill.) College 55-0, Carthage College 21-18, host Concordia 41-15 and Milwaukee School of Engineering 41-12 in its finale.

Hunt recorded a pin in 47 seconds over Reid McNeill of Concordia and also defeated Garret Mulkerin of MSOE by fall in 1:40. He was very close to finishing perfect on the day, losing only a 5-4 decision to Isaiah Causey of Wheaton.

Aragon won a 14-8 decision over Collin Ruiz of Carthage and also added a 16-10 victory over Alexandros Alexiades of Concordia. He also was defeated by Drew Matticks of MSOE by fall in 2:06 in his final match of the day.

Others earning wins for Lakeland included Tyler Salvino (Fr.-Lombard, Ill.), who decisioned Reese Britton of Carthage by a 6-5 count at 149 lbs.. Gavin Malwitz (Fr.-Oostburg, Wis.) also defeated Veliko Kochiu of Concordia at 141 lbs. after Kochiu retired due to injury. Chris Jarka (So.-Poplar Grove, Ill.) also added a win at 149 lbs. against MSOE, pinning Ethan O'Linc in 4:09 at 149 lbs.

Concordia finished with the best record on the day, going 4-0 including a 20-19 victory over Wheaton, which finished 3-1 in duals. MSOE was third with a 2-2 mark with Carthage fourth finishing 1-3.

Lakeland will compete in its second CCIW dual event next Friday when it travels to Naperville, Ill., and the campus of North Central (Ill.) College.
