Wisconsin Lutheran College struck early and the Lakeland University men's soccer team battled but was unable to complete a late rally and fell 3-2 Sunday afternoon for its first loss of the young season.
The Warriors' Jason Cano scored two goals on the day, the first coming just 1:32 into the match, and Lakeland played from behind the rest of the match. The Muskies dropped to 1-1 overall and in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division with the loss, while Wisconsin Lutheran improved to 2-0 overall and in the NACC North.
After Cano's early goal, neither team could find the back of the net for more than forty minutes, and it appeared the teams would go to halftime still separated by a single goal until Ryan Mazza scored off an assist from Cano with 1:37 left in the half to take a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Muskies needed less than two minutes of the second half to cut their deficit in half, as
Michecadet Gethand (
West Bend, Wis.) opened the second half with a bang, scoring his second goal of the season by directing a pass from
Joseph Reyes (
Fr.-Pico River, Calif.) into the goal. The Muskies would stay within 2-1 for the next 25 minutes until Cano scored his second goal of the game by converting a penalty kick at 73:03 to give the Warriors an insurance goal.
Lakeland refused to go away and cut the lead to 3-2 at the 81:02 mark when Reyes scored off a corner kick from
Kidus Samson (
Fr.-San Francisco, Calif.). The Muskies would get a corner kick and three shots off in the final nine minutes, including one on goal by
Lizandro Jimenez (
Jr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) with 93 seconds left that was stopped.
The Muskies outshot WLC 18-14, with both teams having ten shots on goal each. Puma Galvan picked up the win for the Warriors, collecting eight saves, while
Carson Galla (
Fr.-Deerfield, Wis.) saved seven shots on goal for Lakeland in the loss.
Lakeland plays on the road for the first time this season when it travels to Madison on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against Edgewood College.
