Lakeland rallies on the road to tie Edgewood

VERONA, Wis. – The Lakeland University men's soccer team once again staged a second half comeback and rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to tie Edgewood College 2-2 Wednesday night.

Edgewood (0-2-1 overall, 0-2-1 NACC North) looked poised to earn its first win of the season, but the resilient Muskies (1-1-1 overall and in NACC North) responded with second-half goals from freshmen Kidus Samson (San Francisco, Calif.) and Michecadet Gethand (West Bend, Wis.) to force overtime and eventually earn a draw.

Lakeland trailed 2-0 less than six minutes into the second half when an Edgewood foul resulted in a penalty kick, which Samson put into the top right corner of the goal for his first collegiate goal and to cut the Muskies' deficit in half. Gethand then found the back of the net for the third straight game at the 82:37 mark, depositing the rebound of a blocked Samson shot to tie the game at 2-2.

Lakeland had several chances in the two overtime periods, including five shots in the second extra period. Edgewood finished with more shots overall in the match, outshooting Lakeland 27-22 and finishing with a 12-7 edge in shots on goal.

The Eagles got on the board first when Sal Genco scored at 23:53 of the match. Tyler Nelson added a second goal for Edgewood at 35:32 to force the Muskies to play from behind the rest of the match. Lakeland also trailed 2-0 against Wisconsin Lutheran College on Sunday but scored twice in an eventual 3-2 loss, and the Muskies' first three matches have been decided by a combined two goals.

Fresh off winning Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division Defensive Player of the Week honors, Carson Galla (Fr.-Deerfield, Wis.) logged all 110 minutes in goal and recorded nine saves. Edgewood's Brandon Martin saved five Lakeland shots.

Gethand and Samson led the Muskies' attack with six shot attempts each. Michael Barragan (Fr.-Milwaukee, Wis.) and Alessandro Bianchi (So.-Venice, Italy) also attempted three shots each.

Gethand is the first Muskie since Charles Apostolik (2015-18) late in the 2016 season to score in three straight matches. He's also the first to score in three straight games to open a season since 2013 when Farouk Dadzie (2010-13) performed the trick.

The Muskies return to Taylor Field this Sunday to square off against Concordia University Wisconsin at 1 p.m.
