PLYMOUTH, Wis. –
Jack Banks (
Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) drove in four runs and
Peyton Domangue (
Fr.-Thibodaux, La.) struck out eight in a fine starting pitching performance as the Lakeland University baseball team defeated Edgewood College 11-2 to complete a doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon.
The Muskies also topped the Eagles 9-6 in the opening game of the twinbill, and with the second win swept two from Edgewood for the first time since 2011. The two wins also got Lakeland off to a 2-0 start in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division standings.
The Muskies (6-6 overall) received a pair of strong starts on the afternoon, including Domangue going 7 2/3 innings in the nightcap and allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out eight. He induced three double plays and cruised through six scoreless innings while Lakeland built a 6-0 lead.
The Muskies scored twice in the third and then four times in the fourth inning, with Banks driving in the game's first run with a groundout and then knocking in two runs in the fourth with a single up the middle to score
Lino Figueroa (
Jr.-Westchester, Ill.) and
Nathan Hemmerling (
So.-Riverside, Calif.). Banks and
OakLee Spens (
Fr.-Burbank, Calif.) then executed a double-steal with Spens stealing home, and
Hunter Frisk (
So.-Manteca, Calif.) also added a single to drive in Banks.
Lakeland also added three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth, including a two-run double to left-center by
Tyler LaMack (
Fr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) off the glove of centerfielder Connor Goodwin. Banks also added a sacrifice fly in the eighth and
Dylan Penny (
Jr.-River Falls, Wis.) singled to score Frisk.
The Muskies won the second game comfortably after making a charge in the late innings of the opener, scoring six times over the seventh and eighth innings to break open a tie game.
Edgewood (6-13 overall, 0-2 NACC North) had just tied the game in the top of the seventh after scoring a pair of unearned runs when
Collin Schutz (
Jr.-Saint Amant, La.) led off the bottom of the inning with a home run to left field for his first homer of the season. Hemmerling followed next and made it back-to-back with his fifth blast of the season and a 5-3 lead.
Lakeland scored four more in the bottom of the eighth, including a pair on a bases-loaded pickoff throw to third base that went down the line and scored a pair. Schutz and Spens also drove in runs, giving the Muskies plenty of cushion when the Eagles scored three times in the top of the ninth to make it close.
Spens went 3-for-5 in the first game with a double and three runs batted in. LaMack and
Kellen Hodges (
Fr.-Littleton, Colo.) also added two hits each.
Mason Pechy (
Sr.-Diamond Bar, Calif.) started on the mound and in six innings allowed just one hit and one run while striking out a career-high 10, while
Tyler Penny (
Fr.-River Falls, Wis.) picked up the win after pitching the seventh.
Lakeland and Edgewood will meet again tomorrow, completing their four-game series with a second straight doubleheader, this time at the Eagles' Stampfl Field in Verona beginning at 3 p.m. The games originally scheduled for Saturday were postponed to Monday due to rain.
