MILWAUKEE, Wis. –
Lino Figueroa (
Jr.-Westchester, Ill.) hit a bases-loaded double in the top of the ninth inning as part of an improbable comeback as the Lakeland University baseball team rallied for a 10-8 win over Wisconsin Lutheran College in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Muskies scored eight times in the ninth inning to wipe out a five-run deficit and win the opening game of a four-game weekend series with the Warriors. Wisconsin Lutheran came back for a 13-9 win in a second high-scoring game Saturday, and the doubleheader split combined with other league results left Lakeland still tied with Marian University for the top spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division with matching 7-3 records.
Lakeland (11-9 overall) trailed 7-2 heading into the top of the ninth inning of the first game before rallying against the Warriors' bullpen.
Jack Banks (
Sr.-Mountain View, Calif.) singled to drive in two runs,
Hunter Frisk (
So.-Manteca, Calif.) and
Tyler LaMack (
Fr.-Pewaukee, Wis.) followed with RBI singles, and Figueroa delivered the big blow. His double to center field cleared the bases and gave the Muskies a 9-7 lead, and
Kaylab Owings (
Fr.-Bagdad, Ariz.) also added a run-scoring groundout as the Muskies sent 11 hitters to the plate in the ninth.
The rally came after Lakeland played from behind for almost the entire first eight innings and was mostly stymied by WLC starter Jake Wiedower, who went seven innings and allowed seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts. He received run support as the Warriors scored twice in the first inning, answered a Lakeland run in the fourth with two more and built the lead to six runs after scoring two in the eighth.
Frisk and
Collin Schutz (
Jr.-Saint Amant, La.) finished with three hits each in the opener with Banks and Owings both adding two hits. Banks also drove in three runs and Frisk added two RBIs.
Andrew Erbstoesser (
So.-Union, Ill.) earned his first collegiate win, pitching two innings in relief and allowing two runs but getting WLC's Spencer Jens to hit into a double play in the eighth and then inducing a fielder's choice to end the game in the Warriors' last at bat.
Lakeland got off to a better start in the second game, scoring twice in the opening inning including an infield single by
Dylan Penny (
Jr.-River Falls, Wis.), but the Warriors soon took over and scored every inning from the second through the eighth.
Lutheran (9-20 overall, 2-8 NACC North) took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to break a 3-3 tie, and would extend the lead to 9-3 before the Muskies attempted another late rally. Lakeland scored four in the seventh, including a run-scoring single by
Nathan Hemmerling (
So.-Riverside, Calif.) and a three-run double by Owings to make it 9-7, but WLC answered with two more in both the seventh and eighth innings to pull back out to a six-run lead at 13-7.
Owings finished with three hits in the second game and
Oaklee Spens (
Fr.-Burbank, Calif.) and
Kellen Hodges (
Fr.-Littleton, Colo.) added two hits each.
Peyton Domangue (
Fr.-Thibodaux, La.) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) in four innings.
The Muskies will host Wisconsin Lutheran Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
