Lakeland rallies from big deficit for first-ever baseball win over Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – Dylan Penny (Jr.-River Falls, Wis.) drove in the tying and go-ahead runs and the Lakeland University baseball team scored its first-ever win over Carthage College with an 11-9 victory Wednesday afternoon at Augie Schmidt Field.

A pair of five-run deficits and a lightning delay couldn't keep the Muskies from snapping a 0-for-19 record all-time against Carthage. The losing streak to the Firebirds spanned 47 years, but Lakeland improved to 4-6 on the season with the non-conference win in a game just scheduled a day earlier.

Penny drove in three runs in the game, including singling in OakLee Spens (Fr.-Burbank, Calif.) to cap a four-run inning and tie the game at 9-9 in the sixth. He then added a sacrifice fly in eighth inning to score Nathan Hemmerling (So.-Riverside, Calif.) and give the Muskies their first lead of the contest.

Lakeland added an insurance run in the ninth when Kaylab Owings (Fr.-Bagdad, Ariz.) reached on an infield single with two outs while Hunter Bukantis (Fr.-Ovid, Mich.) came in to score. Lino Figueroa (Jr.-Westchester, Ill.) then came on in the bottom of the ninth to shut the door, getting the final three outs for the save including a game-ending 3-6 double play.

The Muskies trailed 6-1 after three innings before a lightning delay suspended play for well over an hour. Lakeland came back from the delay to score three times in the top of the fourth with a two-run single by Drew Nielsen (Sr.-Orange City, Iowa) and a run-scoring double by Hemmerling.

Carthage (9-7 overall) followed with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, though, to extend the lead back out to four runs at 9-4. The Muskies came back with a run in the fifth, though, and then scored four times in the sixth to tie it. Collin Schutz (Jr.-Saint Amant, La.) reached on an error when the ball was thrown away down the first baseline, scoring Owings and Nielsen, and Spens drove in Schutz with an RBI triple before Penny tied the game one batter later.

The Muskies made good use of 10 hits plus six bases on balls, including three hits from Hemmerling and two more by Spens. Lakeland also received outstanding relief pitching over the final 5 2/3 innings, with four pitchers stemming the tide after Carthage built a big lead early.

Alex Mikula (Fr.-Orland Park, Ill.), Sam Wright (Sr.-Geneva, Ill.), Gio Ramirez (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) and Figueroa combined to allow just one hit after the fourth inning, including Mikula, Wright and Ramirez combining for 4 2/3 hitless innings. Ramirez picked up the win after a scoreless eighth, his first collegiate win.

Penny and Hunter Frisk (So.-Manteca, Calif.) joined Hemmerling in reaching base three times each, including Penny and Frisk both walking twice. Hemmerling and Schutz also both scored two runs each.

Bryce Prybylinski led Carthage at the plate going 3-for-5 with six runs batted in, including a three-run home run in the first inning, an RBI double in the third and a two-run single in the fourth. Ben Rietz took the loss, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing four hits and five runs (three earned).

Lakeland returns to Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play when it travels to face Edgewood College on Saturday for a doubleheader in Madison starting at noon.
