The Lakeland University men's soccer team plays its second straight game at home when Finlandia (Mich.) University visits for a Monday evening tilt at Taylor Field.
Broadcast Information:Â
The Muskies and Lions meet for the fifth time in five years and the first time since the teams played to a scoreless tie Aug. 31, 2019 in Ashland, Wis., in a match hosted by Northland College.
Aaron Smith and Alex Vanden Avond combined for the shutout for Lakeland while Noah Raisanen made five saves for Finlandia. The Muskies have the last win in the series, a 1-0 victory at Taylor field Sept. 10, 2018. The Lions' lone win in the series was a 4-2 victory Oct. 15, 2017 at Lakeland. Not included in the teams' official history is a match they played in 2013 that was not completed. The match was suspended due to lightning just before the teams could complete 70 minutes, and the Muskies' 5-2 lead at the time went for naught as the match was declared no contest.
Lakeland last time out: Tied Beloit 0-0 Friday
The Muskies and Buccaneers both had outstanding chances but neither could find the net in a scoreless tie through 110 minutes.
Brendan Perry nearly ended the match in the first overtime when he hit the right post with a shot, while Beloit also had a shot hit both posts in the first half.
Zach Heiman made six saves for his first collegiate shutout, while
Michecadet Gethand led Lakeland offensively with four shot attempts in the team's home opener and the first of eight scheduled home dates this season.
Finlandia last time out: Lost at Calvin (Mich.) 13-0 last Tuesday
The Lions faced a daunting task against the Knights, the third-ranked team in NCAA Division III, and lost by a big score on the road in Grand Rapids, Mich. Calvin scored three goals 3:21 apart to take a 3-0 lead less than 15 minutes into the match, and the Knights added a four-goal flurry over 8:29 in the second half of their dominating win. Three different goalkeepers combined to make 12 saves for Finlandia, which was outshot 44-3 and saw 11 different Calvin players score goals.
About the Lions: Finlandia comes down from Hancock in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and it will stay in Wisconsin to play at Maranatha Baptist tomorrow afternoon. The Lions played their first three games at home, including a 4-1 loss to Lakeland's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference rival Concordia Wisconsin as well as a 3-2 overtime win over Crown (Minn.). Finlandia also has a close 3-2 loss to Blackburn (Ill.) in a game it held a 2-1 lead at halftime. Scott Chrysafidis is in his third year coaching Finlandia, whose 2020-21 season was canceled by the coronavirus pandemic. In their most recent campaign the Lions finished 4-12-1 in the 2019 season.
