Series: 3rd meeting, St. Norbert leads 2-0
Despite the schools being separated by just over 50 miles, the Muskies and Green Knights have met just twice before, and not in nearly 60 years. St. Norbert won the two previous meetings in back-to-back years in 1961 and 1962, including a 25-0 win at Lakeland Oct. 7, 1961 in the first meeting and then a 42-0 shutout Sept. 22, 1962 in De Pere. There have been two other meetings between the schools involving the Muskies' varsity. Lakeland, then known as Mission House College, hosted the St. Norbert freshman team in consecutive years in 1938 and 1939 and picked up two close wins by scores of 14-13 on Sept. 23, 1938 and then 19-12 a year later on Sept. 22, 1939.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Wisconsin Lutheran 56-7
Larry Rivers had another record-breaking day and the Muskies could seemingly do little wrong on Homecoming last week, scoring 50 points in the first half of a romp in their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener. Rivers set a new school single-game rushing record with six touchdowns in little more than two quarters and tied Pat Curran's Lakeland game records for touchdowns and points set back in 1968. Rivers gained 204 yards rushing,
Charl'Tez Nunnery added 110 yards on the ground and freshman
Devin Martin caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Nunnery and also added a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Muskies gained 627 yards of offense and 33 first downs, and the defense was just as overpowering with four interceptions, six sacks-including three by
Otis Watts-and just 59 yards allowed on the ground.
St. Norbert last time out: Lost at Wisconsin-Stout 34-14 Sept. 11
The Green Knights were idle last week while the rest of the NACC opened conference play. In its most recent game, St. Norbert hung in for a half with UW-Stout before the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school pulled away with three consecutive touchdowns in less than 15 minutes to build a 34-6 lead. St. Norbert forced three Stout turnovers and on offense drove into Blue Devil territory eight times but had just six points to show for it until a nine-play, 80-yard drive in the fourth quarter on their final offensive possession. Ben Kohl passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns and freshman Parker Lawrence caught five passes for 94 yards and a score.
About the Green Knights: St. Norbert makes its debut in the NACC Saturday night after spending the previous 37 years in the Midwest Conference, where the Green Knights were the preeminent program winning 17 conference championships in their time. St. Norbert has won at least six games every year since 1999 and boasts a string of 21 consecutive winning seasons, making 12 NCAA Division III playoff appearances in that time.
The Green Knights defeated Loras (Iowa) 21-14 in their season opener this year, their first game since 2019 after their entire 2020-21 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. St. Norbert finished 6-3 in 2019 in its most recent full season, including a win over UW-Eau Claire of the WIAC, and head coach Dan McCarty has a 41-13 record in six years at the school in De Pere, in the suburbs of Green Bay.
Sack Attack: The Muskies defense through three games is putting up some of the best numbers in Division III, including leading the country in sacks. Lakeland's 18 sacks through three games is three more than any other D-III program, and its 6.00 sacks per game also is best in the nation. The Muskies also are tied for the most tackles for loss (33) in Division III, and
Otis Watts ranks second in Division III in sacks (six) and tied for 11th in tackles for loss.Â
Accolades for Larry: Larry Rivers was named the NACC Offensive Player of the Week after his record performance against Wisconsin Lutheran, and he also was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, an all-star team from the week from across Division III. Rivers is off to a flying start to the season with 526 yards rushing, an 8.3 yard per carry average and eight touchdowns through three games. He leads the NACC in total yards, rushing yards per game (175.3) and rushing touchdowns, and also is tied for the lead nationally in Division III in rushing scores and ranks second in total rushing yards, third in rushing yards/game and fifth in yards/carry.
Rivers also took a big jump up several Lakeland all-time lists last week, and he now ranks sixth in school history in career touchdowns (32) and seventh in career points scored (202). The senior needs just one touchdown to tie Craig Buzea (1981-84) for fifth in touchdowns, and is seven points behind Tim Seifert (1967-70) and eight points behind Buzea on the all-time scoring list.
Lockdown: Senior cornerback
Rayshion Brumfield is another Muskie off to an outstanding start to the season. Brumfield has two interceptions and five pass breakups already, putting him tied for the lead in the NACC in the first category-with teammate
Andrew Cardiel among those also with two picks and atop the conference in the second. Brumfield also is third on the team with 14 tackles, but four of those tackles have been for loss coming up from his corner spot. He ranks tied for seventh in the NACC in tackles for loss, making him one of five Muskies in the top 10 in the conference in TFLs. Others include
Otis Watts (tie-1st),
Chris Daniels (tie-4th),
D'Jimon Stuckey (tie-7th) and
Shazon Crutcher (tie-10th).
Undefeated in 2021: Lakeland is 3-0 this season and is 6-0 in calendar year 2021. The Muskies also finished 3-0 in the abbreviated spring season, including a spring win over Wisconsin Lutheran. Lakeland has not lost since falling to Aurora in the 2019 season finale at Taylor field.
Rido ready: Muskies senior receiver
Jaylen Rido caught a career-high five passes against Wisconsin Lutheran for 63 yards and is poised to post his biggest numbers yet in his senior season. The 6-foot-5 Houston, Texas native missed the season opener but has seven catches in two games, including a 37-yard touchdown catch against Anderson (Ind.), and he had some big games in the abbreviated spring season with nine catches over three games for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Rido is on pace to quickly surpass his career highs of 11 receptions and 201 yards set in 2019, and he also has been a big-play threat with six career touchdown receptions, four of them 37 yards or longer.
