Series history:Â 75th meeting, Lakeland leads 40-34
While Lakeland holds the all-time series lead, Wisconsin Lutheran has won five straight and nine of the last 11 meetings, including all three last season, all in Milwaukee. The Warriors swept two regular season meetings in back-to-back days, winning 86-72 Feb. 12, 2021 and 104-91 the next day, and then rolled to a 105-71 win in the first round of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference North Division playoffs. The last two Lakeland wins came in the 2017-18 season when the Muskies swept Wisconsin Lutheran, including a 95-79 win at Woltzen Gymnasium. The series dates back to Jan. 27, 1982, when Lakeland won the first meeting 131-54, and the Muskies won the first 10 meetings before WLC's first win in the series in Jan. 1990.
Lakeland last time out: Defeated Edgewood 79-70 Saturday
The Muskies picked up a badly needed win, leading most of the way and holding on after the Eagles made a late charge. Lakeland led by 15 points with less than seven minutes left but Edgewood rallied to within two points with a minute left. The Muskies closed the game out making seven straight free throws in the final minute and defeated an Eagles team that had just two NACC losses coming in.
Tylan Huff and
Cam Jaeger both scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures,
Matt Sechman notched his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and the Muskies improved to 7-0 this season when outrebounding their opponent.
Wisconsin Lutheran last time out: Won at Aurora 90-81 Jan. 17
The Warriors have been idle for over a week but in their last game shot 58.9% from the field to top the Spartans on the road. WLC finally shook off Aurora late after first building a 14-point lead in the first half, going on a 9-0 run in the final minute of the first half to take a 48-40 halftime lead, and then finally pulling away late after the teams were tied with less than nine minutes left. Jacob Stoltz scored a career-high 37 points for Lutheran and Alex VanCrete added 19 points as the Warriors won despite committing 23 turnovers.
About the Warriors: Wisconsin Lutheran comes in having won four straight games and is just one-half game behind St. Norbert for first in the NACC. The Warriors hold the best overall record in the conference and their only losses this season are to St. Norbert, Edgewood and Wartburg (Iowa). The Warriors won the 2021 NACC Tournament, returned all five starters and came into the season as the favorites in the conference's preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors. WLC is again led by Aaron Aanonsen, who is in his fifth year at the school after serving as Lakeland's head coach from 2008-17. Current Lakeland coach
Sam Schroeder was an assistant under Aanonsen for six years.
