Michael, Diaz both receive individual honors after Lakeland’s Homecoming win

The first win of the season for the Lakeland University football team resulted in multiple individual honors as both Robby Michael (Fr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) and Agustin Diaz (Sr.-Chilton, Wis.) were recognized Tuesday morning for their play Saturday.

Michael was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while Diaz was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, as part of the website's weekly all-star list honoring the top players nationally across NCAA Division III at each position from the previous week. Both were honored after Lakeland's 43-23 win over Concordia University Chicago on Homecoming Saturday.

Michael received the NACC's top offensive player honor for the first time in his career after another excellent performance in what has become a terrific first collegiate season. The freshman quarterback rushed 22 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns and also completed 20 of 38 passes for 214 yards and two scores.

Michael posted his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, and his 74-yard touchdown run in the third quarter gave the Muskies a 30-16 lead as they pulled away from the Cougars in the second half. He also had his first game with multiple touchdown passes this season, connecting with Chris Crawford (Jr.-Chicago, Ill.) for scores from seven and 18 yards out.

The freshman has completed 86 of 166 passes for 896 yards and three touchdowns and also leads the NACC with 751 yards rushing through six games. The Sheboygan Lutheran graduate is on pace to become the first player in Lakeland history to rush and pass for 1,000 yards in a season.

Diaz had a career day against Concordia, finishing with eight tackles, with five tackles for loss for a total of 15 yards. The senior linebacker set career highs in both tackles and TFLs and also registered a safety late in the first quarter to give the Muskies a 9-6 lead in the game. He also added a sack inside the red zone to slow down a Cougars drive inside the Lakeland 5-yard line that wound up limited to a field goal.

Diaz has started all six games this season and has 22 tackles (12 solo, 10 assisted). He is second on the team and also tied for 14th in the NACC with six tackles for loss.

The awards for Michael and Diaz are the first individual honors this season for the Lakeland football team, and the first since early November of last year, when Andrew Cardiel (Sr.-Needville, Texas) was named the NACC's defensive player of the week and Charles Kobe (Jr.-Glendale, Wis.) was named the NACC's top special teams performer of the week and also to the D3football.com Team of the Week.

The Muskies (1-5 overall) next will face Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday in the 31st annual Cheese Bowl game, to be played at CUW's Tomasini Stadium in Mequon beginning at 1 p.m.
